Market Trends and Economic Outlook
Tensions run high in presidential election years. Yet the stock market's impressive uptrend since early November seems to press forward an argument: Investing returns can grow no matter who wins.
The case for positive returns in 2024 rests largely on one key factor: optimism over future earnings. Put another way, strong future profit growth sets up reasonable valuations today.
Losing its long-standing spot as the most valuable S&P 500 stock was Apple's (AAPL) first indignity. But now it's on the cusp of losing the No. 2 spot, too.
Thanks to a 12% drop in its stock this year and an 87% surge by Nvidia (NVDA), Apple is now worth just $2.6 trillion. That's already 14% behind the $3 trillion value of Microsoft (MSFT), the most valuable company in the S&P 500, according to an Investor's Business Daily analysis of data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSurge.

Emerging Technology Review

Oracle's shares soared more than 13% to reach a record high on Tuesday, driven by indications of progress in the company's strategy to capture a share of the cloud-computing market, thanks to its partnership with AI chip giant Nvidia.
The database megacorporation also hinted at forthcoming joint announcements with Nvidia, which are expected next week, potentially during the chip firm's GTC developer conference running from March 18 to 21.
Oracle has positioned itself as a low-cost cloud provider, investing billions of dollars in Nvidia chips to bolster its competitiveness against industry giants like Amazon and Microsoft.
Dario Amodei, chief executive of the high-profile AI startup Anthropic, told Congress last year that new AI technology could soon enable unskilled but malevolent individuals to create large-scale biological attacks, such as releasing viruses or toxic substances that cause widespread disease and death.
Senators from both parties were alarmed, while AI researchers in both industry and academia debated the seriousness of the threat.
Space Out

On March 12th, Rocket Lab launched a commercial radar-imaging satellite, continuing to expand a constellation. An Electron rocket, carrying one of the Japanese company Synspective's Strix-3 satellites, lifted off from Rocket Lab's New Zealand launch site. The launch occurred at 11:03 a.m. EDT (1503 GMT; 4:03 a.m. local New Zealand time on March 13), 40 minutes into the previously advertised one-hour launch window.
It still feels a bit like a science fiction movie, as if we have traveled there to see it up close, and the results are so exciting.
Recent observations of Betelgeuse, a star located in the constellation Orion, have created a mystery surrounding the red supergiant. They suggest it is spinning much faster than a star of its size should be able to.
Now, a team from the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, led by Ph.D. student Jing-Ze Ma, may have an explanation for why Betelgeuse appears to be spinning so rapidly. Perhaps, the researchers suggest, it's actually an illusion created by the star's violently boiling surface.
The Crypto State

Decentralized finance (DeFi) continues to revolutionize traditional finance by providing open and permissionless access to financial services such as lending, borrowing, and trading. However, the rapid growth of DeFi protocols also raises concerns about security vulnerabilities, smart contract risks, and regulatory compliance.
Ethereum, one of the largest cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, is undergoing a significant upgrade known as Ethereum 2.0. This upgrade aims to transition Ethereum from a proof-of-work (PoW) to a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. This transition is expected to enhance the Ethereum network's scalability, security, and sustainability.
